FREMONT- Downtown Fremont has a fresh new glow. The Village’s full conversion to LED streetlights in the downtown corridor is officially complete, with Oehlke Electric finishing the project just before the start of the weekend.

The project replaces the long-standing high-pressure sodium bulbs, which cast a softer yellow glow, with crisp 120-watt LED fixtures. The previous lights operated at 400 watts, so the change represents a significant reduction in energy use while delivering a brighter and more consistent illumination throughout Main Street. Updated sensors were also installed to improve reliability and help the Village quickly identify outages.

Residents and business owners noticed the change immediately. The crisp lighting brightens sidewalks and parking areas, and enhances the overall appearance of the downtown strip without taking away any of its charm.

WE Energies has also continued its broader lighting upgrades throughout the community, replacing many light fixtures along Waupaca Street and other nearby areas. Weyauwega Fremont News has reached out to confirm which additional streets/lights have already been updated, but has not yet received details.

Streetlight electricity remains a notable operating cost for the Village, averaging around $23,000 per year. Officials expect the switch to LED technology to reduce that expense over time while also cutting down on maintenance needs.

With the downtown portion now complete, Fremont moves one step closer to a fully modernized lighting system community-wide. For residents and visitors alike, the difference is already shining through.
