Upper Midwest Powerboat Association Season Finale: Boat Drag Racing Downtown Fremont

Fremont-The Upper Midwest Powerboat Association (UMPBA) returns to Fremont this weekend, September 6–7, for its two-day season finale on the Wolf River. Racing begins at 11:00 AM Saturday and 10:00 AM Sunday with a home base at the Webfooters Water Ski Show grounds (314 Wolf River Dr.), where spectators can take in the roar of the engines and the thrill of drag boat racing!

A Growing Sport

The 2025 season has been a strong one for the UMPBA. This year, the group added a Junior Racer Class for ages 13–15, limited to 55 mph, to help introduce the next generation to the sport. “It’s been great for growing interest and letting young racers learn in a safe, competitive environment,” the association shared.

Classes & Competition

Fans can expect up to 40–50 entries this weekend, with racers traveling from Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, and even as far as New York. The competition features seven classes by top speed: JR (55 mph), 65, 75, 85, 95, 105, and Unlimited. Races are tracked using Mylaps LiveTime technology out of De Pere, WI, ensuring accuracy and excitement at the finish line.

Why Fremont?

Fremont has become a favorite host for UMPBA. “The venue on the river makes it great as it’s a protected waterway,” the group explained. The Webfooters Ski Team partners with UMPBA to run the event, providing grandstand seating at the finish line, while restaurants along the river give fans plenty of places to watch and enjoy the action.

“The UMPBA Races bring incredible energy to Fremont! Our businesses love the excitement, and we are proud to welcome the racers and fans each year,” said Lisa Socha, Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce President and owner of Hotel Fremont.

This is the fourth year the organization has come to Fremont, making it an area favorite, family-friendly event for all ages!

Looking Ahead for Upper Midwest Powerboat Association

For 2026, UMPBA plans to expand with new venues. Fremont and Stevens Point will remain on the schedule, with Forest Lake, MN and Beaver Dam, WI joining the circuit.
