- Weyauwega's Horse and Buggy Days Celebrating Cheese-O-Wega This Weekend
Weyauwega, WI — October 11, 2025 Main Street in Weyauwega will once again come alive this Saturday as the community gathers for its annual Horse and Buggy Days , a long-standing tradition that celebrates the city’s history and small-town spirit. This year’s event carries a special “Cheese-O-Wega” theme, honoring Weyauwega’s rich heritage in Wisconsin’s cheese industry and the many local businesses that helped earn the town its flavorful reputation. A Tradition Rooted in History Horse and Buggy Days first began in 1960 , when a group of local business leaders came together to create a festival that honored the “days of old” and gave the community a reason to celebrate together. Over the decades, the event has grown into one of the most anticipated weekends of the year, featuring parades, contests, music, and heritage displays. In earlier years, organizers even issued wooden nickels as souvenirs — one from 1970 reads “10th Annual Horse and Buggy Days, Oct. 2-3, 1970, Weyauwega, Wis.” The celebration continues to evolve, blending tradition with new attractions, while always keeping its nostalgic charm. 2025 “Cheese-O-Wega” Schedule — Saturday, October 11 9–10 a.m. — 5K Fun Walk/Run hosted by Silverback Strength 10 a.m. — Scavenger Hunt registration at City Hall (awards at 4 p.m.) 10 a.m. — Grain Silo Rededication – recently repainted landmark 11:30 a.m. — Kiddie Parade on Main Street 12 p.m. — Main Parade featuring cheese-themed floats and awards 12–3 p.m. — Wega Fire Department Open House – raffle drawing at 2 p.m. 1–4 p.m. — Cheesecake, Pie & Ice Cream Social – City Hall 1:30 p.m. — Children’s Games on Main Street 1:30–3 p.m. — Bingo – Dahlke Funeral Home 1:30 p.m. — Mousehole Tourney – Main Street Taverns 1:30–4 p.m. — Old-Fashioned Photo Booth – Gerold Opera House 2:30 p.m. — Beard & Mustache Contest – Main Street Klippers 3 p.m. — History of Cheese in Weyauwega Presentation – Gerold Opera House 4–5 p.m. — Karaoke – Gerold Opera House 5 p.m. — Cheese Curd Eating & Cheese Tasting Contests – City Hall 6:30 p.m. — Bluegrass Concert featuring Chicken Wire Empire – Gerold Opera HouseTickets $10 in advance, $15 at the door A Full Day of Family Fun The day will also feature a “bank robbery” reenactment, bounce houses, and live street performances by Professor Pinkerton Xyloma of Deadman’s Carnival fame. Whether you come for the parade, contests, or live music, there’s something for everyone at this year’s celebration. Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present From its small-town beginnings to its modern-day revival, Horse and Buggy Days continues to embody what makes Weyauwega special — community pride, creativity, and a sense of togetherness. - One Man Dead, Another Hospitalized After Boating Accident on Lake Poygan
A weekend outing on Lake Poygan ended in tragedy after a two-day water rescue and recovery effort near the Bay Lane Boat Launch. According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the launch around 4:37 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, for a report of a man in distress who had been found in the water by another boater. The man was pulled from the lake and transported by Fremont Ambulance to a local hospital, where he is expected to recover. During contact with others aboard the vessel, deputies learned that a second man was missing and believed to still be in the water. Search and rescue crews, including the Winnebago County Dive and Drone Teams, worked late into the evening and resumed the search Sunday. Early Sunday afternoon, the missing man was found deceased with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and multiple local fire departments, including Boom Bay, Winneconne-Poygan, Poy Sippi, Fremont, and Omro-Rushford. The victim’s name has not yet been released pending notification of family members. An eyewitness told Weyauwega-Fremont News & Events that high winds and choppy water conditions may have contributed to the accident, though authorities have not confirmed a cause. Officials have not yet said whether the vessel was privately owned or rented. The incident remains under investigation. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those affected,” Sheriff John Matz said in a statement. This story will be updated as more information becomes legally available from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin DNR.

- Daniel Eugene Solberg (Danny Darren) Obituary
November 19th, 1939 - October 1, 2025 Daniel Eugene Solberg (professionally known as Danny Darren), age 85, of New London, went home to the Loving Embrace of our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025. Born on Nov. 19,1939 to Issac and Margaret Solberg in Kaukauna, he was the fifth child of 12 children born into a traditional country and bluegrass music-loving family. Music was often played until the wee hours of the morning and on holidays, especially at Christmas. At a young age, he formed his first band, Danny Darren and the Drifting Playboys (later changed to Danny Darren and the Drifting Cowboys). He appreciated fine musicianship and heartfelt singing. Some of his favorite artists were Hank Williams, Sr., Hank Snow, Bill Monroe, Stanley Brothers, Louvin Brothers and Merle Haggard. He performed over 20 years in the Milwaukee area at numerous honky tonks and clubs. He recorded several 45s and some albums in Hubertus and Nashville and enjoyed visiting with famous legends such as Porter and Dolly. A thrill of a lifetime for Danny was when he was the 'opening act' for country legend, Hank Snow. Danny has a brother in the business (Bobby Darren) and throughout the years, they've performed several shows and recorded a few CDs together. Music was a strong bond for both. Danny wrote a few songs including: "The Grand Ole Opry Song", "Oh Brother, Can't You See There's Something Missing" and "Loneliness". One of Danny's most recognized tunes is a song penned by Hank Williams, Sr., "Teardrop on A Rose". It's been noted he is the only person besides Hank to have ever recorded that song. Danny was an avid supporter of the veterans starting at the age of 12, performing for several years at the Veterans Home in King and at veterans' events in the Weyauwega area for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. In 2007, he recorded a CD entitled 'Forgotten Memories' featuring the single "Letter from Vietnam". In recent years, Danny continued playing at clubs and he also performed at area nursing and assisted living homes, with a favorite being Willow Lane in Appleton. He performed these shows with nephew, Jeffrey Solberg (who was his bass player and bandmate for 48 years) and his niece, Sheila Marie. Danny was an area favorite for many years, performing at the Weyauwega Horse and Buggy Days. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing during Mass at St. Peter and Paul Parish in Weyauwega. He also performed as part of a local group called High Lonesome Country/ Gospel with Buzz Jossie and Megan (Pethke) Prill. Throughout his life, Danny sang at countless funerals of family members and friends and always felt it was an honor. He often joked the only one he wouldn't be singing at would be his own. In 2017, a huge honor was bestowed upon Danny. He was inducted into the National Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and his music, especially his recording of 'Fool About You, is well known in the UK and has been featured on several compilation albums. In 2018, Danny was awarded a "CD of the Year Award" for his CD "Forgotten Memories" in the UK with a record review featured in the Country Music News International Magazine and Radio Show. In the record review, Bob Everhart, President of the National Traditional Country Music Association stated "Old time country music has always been a 'story in a song' and Danny Darren proves without a shadow of a doubt that 'truth' still persists in that kind of presentation....Danny is very expressive and honest in his presentation - that's what real country music is all about." Besides music, he had a great love for fishing, especially for Northerns. He enjoyed watching birds and wildlife in his yard. Danny loved all animals, especially dogs. He enjoyed movies from years ago including family shows and 'The Godfather'. He jokingly referred to himself as 'Danny Luciano'. He also loved to watch videos of family get-togethers and music shows from throughout the years of his and other favorite singers and musicians entertaining. A great way to capture the essence of who Danny was is by a quote he said after being inducted into the National Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame.... "I'm thankful for my Mother and Dad and the music they played and inspired us to play. I thank the Good Lord first for giving me the ability. If the Good Lord gives you a talent, you should use it and share it with others." Danny was one of a kind.... One of the last of the Country/Bluegrass purists... staying true to his roots and he will long be missed. He is survived by two daughters: Terrie (Jeff) Stokes and Karla Jepson; grandchildren: Westly Martin Stokes, Jordan Robert Stokes and Jasmyn Jepson, along with great-granddaughter Mia Stokes and great-grandson Theo Stokes; sisters and brother-in-law: Carol (Bob) Romportl and Marge Bigford; brothers and sisters-in-law: Richie (Margie), Ronnie (Ruth), Johnny, Raymond (Marlene), Vincent (Sandy) and Robert (Julie Stickney) Solberg and Debra Solberg; Godsons: Terrance Kilishek, Jason Solberg and Dan Solberg. Further survived by bandmates: nephew Bill Solberg, great-nephew Mickey O'Leary and niece Sheila Kilishek; numerous nieces and nephews and friends, including friend, Dan Davidson. Preceded in death by: his loving companion of over 30 years, Ada (Rita) Shilts, his parents, Ike and Marge Solberg; brothers and sisters-in-law: Gerald (Gloria) and Donald (Josephine) Solberg; sister and brother-in-law: Elizabeth (Richard) Kilishek, sister-in-law Connie Solberg, nephews and niece-in-law: Jeffrey (Phyllis) Solberg, Brian Solberg, Jimmy Solberg, Kurt Solberg, and Klint Solberg; nieces: TeLisa Solberg, Crystal Solberg, Marilyn Solberg; great-niece Allison Heegeman and great-nephews: Joshua Solberg, Jevon Lemke, Evan Sell, along with several beloved past bandmates and friends and family pets he cherished.
